On most of our farm tables, especially with the reclaimed wood, the look we are shooting for is a relaxed, easy finish. Since these boards are any where from 100-200 yrs old, the idea is to see and appreciate the wood itself, not a shiny, plastic, or "perfect" finish. While it would be a nice thought to simply wipe on some Danish oil and call it done.... that does not provide enough protection for our hectic lives these days.
We choose tough, durable low-luster polyurethane or lacquer for most. This gives the wood a chance to shine in a subtle way, while providing a simple wipe up of any spills.
On our vertical pieces such as hutches, book cases, & beds, we generally like to use Shellac or Lacquer. Again, both of these add protection and let the beauty of the wood speak for itself. The idea is not to "see" the finish but to admire the craftsmanship of the piece and beauty of the wood.
For painted surfaces, we love to use Milk paints. Nothing is more durable than this for paint!....and completely non-toxic. The texture is smooth and the colors are vibrant, great choice for children's furniture.
